Located at Long Beach, California, you will find this aquarium at the mouth of the Los Angeles River. Currently there are over 12,500 animals representing over 1000 different species! Focusing on the Pacific Ocean, there are 3 major permanent galleries: Southern California and Baja, Northern Pacific and Tropical Pacific. The construction of the Aquarium of the Pacific started in 1995 and it opened in 1998. It was built on an area prone to earthquakes so the facility was built on top of 1800 cement pilings that extended 85 feet into the ground surrounded by gravel! This non-profit institution is visited by 1.3 million people each year and it's the only facility in the world to successfully breed Weedy Sea Dragons in captivity.

Sea Jellies Gallery

This beautiful exhibit is filled with more than a dozen species of sea jellies (also known as Jelly Fish)! See jellies have flourished in the world's oceans for 650 million years without brains or hearts! Did you know that they were made up of 95% water? With up to 800 tentacles that can bear stinging nematocysts that can injure and immobilize prey; don't be fooled by its outward beauty!

Lorikeet Forest Exhibit

Chirp chirp chirp! Bird lovers must come to this lively exhibit! From the coastal lowlands of Australia there birds are around 10 inches long and have the most dazzling color combinations! In this 3,200 square foot outdoor aviary you will birds with feathers of brilliant blues and greens to reds and yellows! There are more than 100 enthusiastic lorikeets that fill the trees of this aviary and you can buy a small cup of nectar (their favorite food) and feed the birds as you walk through he exhibit! Look out! Theses birds are extremely friendly and will sit on your hand, arm, shoulder and even your head, just to get a sip of nectar!

Tropical Pacific Gallery

With 16 exhibits in this gallery representing the beautiful marine life that you would find off the coast of Palau (westernmost section of the Micronesian islands), you will also find the Tropic Reef Habitat! As the Aquarium's largest exhibit, it holds 350,000 gallons of water and over 100 colorful fish and beautiful coral can be found! There are also sea turtles, zebra, black-tip reef sharks, porcupine puffers and much more!
