Hollywood Walk of Fame

You can find the Hollywood Walk of Fame on 18 blocks of Hollywood Boulevard. To fully appreciate the 18-block-long Walk, consider taking a LAX car rental. The Walk stretches from Gower Street to La Brea Avenue, and on Vine Street: from Yucca Street to Sunset Boulevard.

Why not let LAX car rentals take you to the Walk of Fame where the sidewalks are lined with more than 2,100 bronze-star plaques, embedded in pink and charcoal terrazzo squares. Each star has an emblem below the celebrity's name. This emblem represents which category the celebrity made a significant contribution.

The symbols and categories are:

  • motion picture camera (movie stars and directors)
  • television set (television industry)
  • phonograph (singers, songwriters and recording artists)
  • radio microphone (radio stars)
  • twin theatrical masks of comedy and tragedy (live stage performers)

Having a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame means a celebrity has been recognized for his/her lifelong contribution by the public and peers.

Chris Farley, a famous comedian best known for his work with Saturday Night Live, was honored posthumously August 26, 2005. Visit this recently installed star by driving in a LAX car rental. His star can be found on 6366 Hollywood Blvd, which is located in front of the Improv Olympic West theater where he used to perform.

Celebrities chosen for 2006, in their respective categories, are:
  • Movies: Annette Bening, Matthew Broderick, Holly Hunter, William Hurt, Nathan Lane, Steve Martin and Charlize Theron.
  • TV: Ray Romano, Vanna White, Judge Judy, sportscaster Jim Hill, producer/writer David Milch and journalist/host Robert Osborne.
  • Musical recording: Motley Crue, Isaac Hayes, Alejandro Fernandez and record producer Lou Adler.
  • Live theatre/performance: Shecky Greene and Magic Castle founders Milt & Bill Larsen.
  • Radio: DJ Wink Martindale, talk show host Dan Avey, and DJ's Mark & Kim.
  • Posthumous stars: actor Jack Cassidy and ABC founder Leonard Goldenson.

LAX car rentals asks if you knew:
  • Anyone can nominate a celebrity for the Walk of Fame, as long as the celebrity or his/her representative provides a letter of agreement
  • It costs $15,000 for a Walk of Fame star ceremony. Not only does this amount cover the creation and installation of the star, it also covers maintenance costs.
  • Ceremonies can be scheduled up to five years after the celebrity has been chosen. After that time period, another application must be submitted.
  • Each June, the selection committee meets to pick about 20 stars for the Walk of Fame from the 200-some applications they receive each year.
  • The singing-cowboy Gene Autry is the celebrity has the most "stars" on the Walk of Fame. He has one star under each category.

History of the Hollywood Walk of Fame
  • The idea for the Walk of Fame first came about in 1958. The City of Los Angeles deemed the Walk a Cultural/Historic Landmark in 1978.
  • In 1960, when the Walk was first created, there were more than 2,500 blank "stars.
  • On 9th February. 1960, Joanne Woodward was the first celebrity to have a star placed in her honor.
  • Within the first 16 months after the Walk was created, 1,558 stars were awarded.

Since then, new stars have been awarded at the rate of approximately two per month. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce schedules the ceremonies. LAX car rentals suggests if you're interested in spotting celebrities, find out when the ceremonies are scheduled because usually colleagues and friends of nominees attend these functions.

Unique nominations
There are a handful of characters who are honored, including Mickey Mouse, Big Bird, and to two dogs, Lassie and Rin Tin Tin.

Now Nintendo star Mario is seeking a new category for the famous Walk. This new category would honor video game characters and their creators. About 7,000 video game fans from all over the globe have signed an online petition to support the new category.
