Nicknames

The team didn’t have an official nickname until 1933. Before then, sportswriters and fans came up with several suggestions, including the Brooks, the Atlantics and the Bridegrooms (in reference to several players getting married before 1888).

Deluxe Rent A Car Los Angeles notes that at the same time Brooklyn had streetcars set up, writers began calling the team and city by the term “Trolley Dodgers” – which was truncated to “Dodgers.”

Over the years, with the change of managers, the team nickname also changed. When the team was under Ned Hanlon’s management, the team became known as the “Superbas.” The “Superbas” was a popular acrobatic troupe called “Hanlon’s Superbas.”

Under manager Wilbert Robinson, the team was known as the Robins, though newspapers used Robins and Dodgers interchangeably. Team uniforms had “Brooklyn” or a stylized “B”, but uniforms didn’t contain any nicknames until 1933, on which the word Dodgers appeared.

Rivalry with the Giants
For more than a century, the Dodgers and the Giants have had a heated rivalry. This rivalry began when both clubs played in New York City (Giants were based out of Manhattan). Both franchises moved to California in 1958 (Giants are now based out of San Francisco). The rivalry continued in economic, political and cultural arenas.

Longest serving broadcaster
For the past 55 years, Vin Scully has been the play-by-play announcer for the Dodgers. He has served the longest tenure of any broadcaster with a single club in professional sports history. Deluxe Rent A Car Los Angeles asks if you knew that the Dodgers fans chose Scully as the Most Memorable Personality (on the field or off) in the team’s history.
