The team was founded in 1967. The team uniform colors are purple, black, and silver with its logo design of a silver crown outlined in purple.

In the 1988-1988 season, the Los Angeles Kings wore their black and silver uniforms for the first time. That year, the team finished fourth in the league, Gretzky was awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy as league MVP by turning the team around with his record 168 points. In 1992-1993, for the first time in club history, the team advanced past the second round. They defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs in seven games in order to make it to their first Stanley Cup Finals.
