Mulholland Drive

Imagine steering your car on the winding roads near the mountain side as you marvel at the gorgeous view below... this is not your typical car racing video game, its Mulholland Drive! Take your Los Angeles car rental to Mulholland Drive in California and follow its twists and turns! Lining the drive are also many spectacular houses of the rich and famous as well as great picnic spots and stops with great back drops of beautiful Los Angeles for some awesome pictures!

Facts

Named after the engineer William Mulholland upon his death in 1935, this drive is every curve lover's urban dream! Cyclists and joggers also get to share the road, so look out for them when you're driving! Mulholland Drive also provides a great view of LA and the San Fernando Valley as well as the Pacific Ocean before ending in Encino! There are several parks that line the drive so you can take a rest from driving your Los Angeles car rental and take a picnic break! The drive connects two sections of the 10 freeway (crossing Coldwater Canyon Drive) and is mostly a two land minor arterial road that follows the ridgeline of the Santa Monica Mountains and Hollywood Hills. The drive takes around 45 minutes depending on driving conditions.

Things to see on Mulholland Drive

Santa Monica Mountains

These majestic mountains run approximately 64 km EW from Point Mugu in Ventura County into Hollywood Hills in LA. The mountains form barriers between San Fernando Valley and the LA Basin, separating "the Valley" on the north and west central LA on the South. You will find that the mountains are covered by hundreds of local plants species both rare and common. There is wildlife such as mountain lions and the endangered steel head. There wildlife faces pressures from the local public who see the mountains as a recreational retreat, residential area and a rare wild place in the middle of urban LA.

Hollywood Hills

This unofficial designation in LA is part of the eastern section of the low transverse range of the Santa Monica Mountains. The Hollywood Hills extend from Los Feliz District and Hollywood to the Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu and Pacific Palisades. There is also extensive residential development in the Hollywood Hills since 1920's where many movie stars have made their homes here. This area includes Mulholland Drive, Laurel Canyon, and Nichols Canyon. Drive by these areas in your Los Angeles car rental and marvel at the grand mansions of the rich and famous!

Laurel Canyon Boulevard

As a major street in Los Angeles, the Laurel Canyon Boulevard is located south of Ventura Boulevard in Studio city. It ascends the Santa Monica Mountains and keeps a width of 4 lanes until the intersection on Mulholland Drive. This beautiful boulevard was also the former home of Frank Zappa.

Getting to Mulholland Drive

To get to Mulholland Drive, take your Los Angeles car rental on the 405 freeway (north or south) and exit at Mulholland Drive, then turn left. On Skirball Center Drive, follow the short road and you will see Mulholland Drive.

Driving along Mulholland Drive

Be careful not to speed on Mulholland Drive, there are many windy and narrow parts! Overall it is an easy drive at around 20-30 MPH. When you are in the area near Coldwater Canyon Rd. be sure to get in the left turn land to stay on Mulholland Drive! The next main intersection is Laurel Canyon Boulevard (more details mentioned above) where you can find the best view of downtown LA. Near the End of Mulholland Drive is a popular turnout where you and park your Los Angeles car rental and take a break! Grab your camera and take some pictures!
