History

In 1974, J. Paul Getty opened his first museum on his property in Malibu, California. He re-created of the Villa of the Papyri at Herculaneum. In 1997, the museum moved to its current location in Brentwood. The original Malibu museum, renamed the "Getty Villa", was closed for major renovations. The Getty Villa now houses the Greek and Roman sculptures that used to be contained in the Getty Centre.

In early 2006, the Getty Villa in Malibu will re-open. This educational center and museum is dedicated to the study of ancient Greece, Rome and Etruria art and culture. More than 44,000 works of arts from these cultures will be featured.

Current exhibit
