Car Rental Los Angeles and the Venice Canals

Deluxe Rent A Car Los Angeles note that the Venice Canals is an upscale neighborhood. Originally the area was supposed to emulate Venice, Italy in its entirety. Not many of the original canals are around.

History of the Venice Canals

Back in 1904, it took back-breaking labor to dig the canals. Abbot Kinney directed the original 16 miles of canals to be dug. He sped up the digging process by deploying steam-dredging equipment in order to meet the deadline of the grand opening for July 4, 1905.

Deluxe Rent A Car Los Angeles note that controversy sprung up after the 1924 election. One of the new administration’s ideas was to build more roads, which meant paving the Pacific Electric’s right of way on Trolley Way and filling in the canals. The Kinney family deeded all the canals north of the Venice Boulevard to the city. Once the roads were paved, new building permits increased. However, canal property owners were upset. They went to court in attempts to stop the transformation of the waterways into roads. The owners made the argument that the project would result in a special assessment to their property. The owners were also worried their district would lose the park-like character. The owners were temporarily successful – thanks to the judge who granted them a temporary injunction on August 6, 1924.

The court case dragged on. Finally, in December 1927, California Supreme Court Judge Henry Hollzer confirmed that the city had the power to fill the canals. Venice had become part of Los Angeles in November 1925. Deluxe Rent A Car Los Angeles point out that the City Council of Los Angeles planned to fill the canals in the summer of 1928. There was little resistance to the filling in of the canals in the end.

In 1929, most of the canals were filled in and converted to roads.

Even though there weren’t many official complaints registered against the filing of the canals, there was an angry group of homeowners who displayed their disapproval. On the first day that the trucks pulled up to dump the loads of dirt to fill the canals, an angry crowd (about 100) jumped into the drained canal and began shoveling the dirt out as fast as the contractor’s crew was filling it. Even with this protest, the canals were filled and roads were paved by the end of the year. It took 90,000 cubic yards of dirt to fill the canals and cost about $636,000. Streets were renamed. Vehicles now drove on the new streets: Main (formerly Coral Canal), Windward (Lion Canal), and Grand Boulevard (formerly Grand).

In the 1970s, the canals hosted the Linnie Canal Downwind Boat Races. Contestants had to build a boat within two hours and then sail it down the Linnie Canal.

Also in the 1970s, the real estate prices increased greatly. Along the canal, more affluent people moved into this neighborhood.
